Student Guidelines and what to expect

Useful information for International Students staying in Homestay

This information will be useful for you if it is your first time in homestay accommodation and will help you understand what to expect.

Your Host

Your host will treat you as one of the family but they are not there to wait on you. Rules maybe handed to you on your arrival to avoid misunderstandings.

Homestay Room

Your homestay room is private for you and is used for sleeping, studying and relaxing. It is your responsibility to keep it tidy, however it will be cleaned once per week together with a change of bed linen. No other person is allowed to stay unless you have booked a twin room. Noise must be kept at a social level eg. Music.

Communal Areas

You will have use of other areas of the house such as the lounge and dining areas for watching TV, eating and mixing with your host family. You are expected to keep these areas tidy and not leave your belongings around. If you have booked self catering the kitchen will be available for your use and it will be necessary to discuss with your host the times that you are allowed to use it. You will be required to purchase your own food and to keep it separate from the rest of the family.

It is important to discuss with your host what you can and cannot do and if you require help we are always available.

Heating

There will be heating in your room and communal rooms but this is usually switched off at night and sometimes during the day so it is important to have warm clothing in the winter. It is unlikely there will be air conditioning in your room however the English climate rarely requires this and opening a window will allow fresh cool air to circulate.

Bathroom

Unless you have booked a private bathroom you will be required to share with other members of the family. Your host will keep the bathroom clean however you are expected to leave it as you found it. A bath towel will be supplied and laundered once a week. Your personal toiletries should be put away and kept separate.

Laundry

Your host will usually launder your clothes once a week or give you use of the washing machine. Times should be discussed with your host and procedures on arrival. Clothes should not be dried in bedrooms or bathrooms.

Meals

Meals are taken with the family and times should be discussed on arrival. If you expect to be late or have made alternative arrangements it is important to let your host know.

Breakfast is continental, usually consisting of cereal, yoghurt, fruit juice and toast with tea or coffee.

Dinners will consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by a desert and coffee.

Unless you have requested self catering you will not be allowed to use the kitchen unless agreed with your host beforehand.

Telephone

It is a good idea to take a mobile phone with you with sufficient talk time to make outgoing calls. It would be inappropriate to make outgoing phone calls from the family telephone. A small number of incoming calls would be acceptable but this should be discussed with your host.

Security

You will be given a key to the the house which you should take great care of and not pass onto anyone else. Should this be lost you must inform your host immediately. Always make sure you lock the door behind you if you are leaving the house with nobody inside.

Your valuables should be carefully stored, however you are solely responsible for your personal items and we highly recommend you take out Student Insurance.

Friends

Should you wish to invite friends to your homestay permission is required from your host which may or may not be accepted. It is important to respect the privacy of your host family and should not be abused.

Help During Your Stay

Your host will always be willing to help you with information during your stay and Easy London Homestay is always available by phone, email or just drop into the office.
